Hocking College Natural Resources Ecotourism & Adventure Travel

How do you picture your college experience?

  • Paddling across a pristine Canadian lake in a canoe to the longest canopy walk in North America?
  • Experiencing the gaze of a timber wolf while working with one of the largest privately-owned sustainable forests in North America?
  • Earning certification in SCUBA or sea kayaking off the world’s third largest barrier reef?
  • Learning the basics of blue water sailing on one of our 47-foot sailboats?
  • Wind-surfing around dozens of uninhabited islands in The Bahamas?
  • Rafting a Class 4 rapid or climbing a 20,000 foot summit in South America?

The Program

Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of local people. In other words, ecotourism focuses on environmentally sound, culturally sensitive, and economically sustainable enterprises.

Each quarter focuses on a specific area. Develop skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Environmental Issues
  • Outdoor Leadership
  • Wilderness Travel Skills
  • Natural History
  • Cultural Interpretation
  • Resource & Business Management
  • Assessment of Ecotourism-Related Ventures
Learn By Doing
  • Begin your education by spending a week at Haliburton Forest, an ecotourism and multi-use forest operation in Ontario, Canada, working with the staff and learning first hand how to operate a successful ecotourism venture.

  • Spend a quarter at Forfar Field Station, located on Andros Island in The Bahamas. Learn to SCUBA dive along the world’s third largest barrier reef and practice sailing on one of our 47 foot sailboats, apply sea kayaking and windsurfing skills along the remote coast of The Bahamas largest island.

  • Complete your education with a choice of adventure leadership concentrations. The water concentration quarter focuses on both whitewater and flat water canoeing and kayaking, while our trekking concentration covers backpacking, rock climbing, and more. We added a new option of Mountaineering in such world class areas as Ecuador and Bolivia. All three concentrations also include certification and hands on practice of Outdoor Leadership skills, along with related rescue techniques and Wilderness First Responder certification.
